The VW Audi Group do this a lot. The MQB platform is probably the most well known and used for a huge percentage of the cars sold by VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat. I have an NJ Fabia on the PQ25 platform, which basically a polo, ibiza and a1 (though the ibiza and a1 use the slightly older PQ24 chassis from the older polo). This isn't a bad thing as the styling is completely different between each brand. Audi being expensive and luxury, vw being sensible and premium, seat being sporty and skoda being the cheaper sensible car. The best part about it is the cheaper brands have the same cool tech, similar handling and the same engines from the expensive models which is a huge win for the average consumer.

What about one that had relative success. I'm sure in US you never heard of it and in Europe just a few probably. The 1998 Ford Fiesta / Mazda 121. The Fiesta was actually a hit in my country. Small and affordable car with a 1.25 cc engine. By 98 most of same size cars had 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2 engines with 8-valve. This was a 16 valve engine capable of producing 75hp. The car was fast and reliable. From the Ford side this sold well, but Mazda couldn't take advantage of this and the 121 was actually a flaw.

Odd name usage. Vauxhall use the 'Nova' name for the Corsa Mk.1, which they felt Corsa would be confused for "Courser". Vauxhall being a subsidiary of GM. I suppose its similar to how in the US the ford Fusion is a large family car (a Mondeo equivelant I think), and in the UK it was a small city car.

GM also sold the Monaro under Vauxhall in the UK. Vauxhall arent exactly a performance car brand, and never have been. No idea why Vauxhall.

Chevy SS (VF commodore) failed in the states because GM never advertised it.
GM didnt give two fucks about holden and the only reason why they sold the VF in the states was too meet an agreement qouta with holden so they could shut down aussie manufacturing.

Now GM and Holden are feeling the full wraith of their decisions here in Australia.

I guarantee if they really tried and cared they would have sold those chevy SS like hotcakes

                                                                                - et c...
All brands do that with-in their own line ups Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus/Scion, Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat/Porsche/Lamborghini/Bentley, et c... but if brands just change nameplates and sell in the same market where they are direct competition to themselves, probably not a great idea to keep all brands alive. If there are some variants in trim and performance it can justify the price difference between models (not always, but sometimes)
But then the cross branded ones like the Toyota 86/Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ
