Mostly excellent video but then it started reaching regarding horizontal expansion & climatic similarities. It sounds sorta halfway plausible but not fully convincing. China’s geographic development was more north-south than east-west. Significant climate difference between north & south. Its westward expansion cut off by deserts, Tarim basin, Tibetan plateau etc. The civilizations of the Fertile Crescent were regional by today’s standards and was bounded on the West by Mediterranean Sea, mountains to the north & east, and the Arabian desert to the south. The Persian empire crossed mountains. The mongol empire crossed steppe, desert, mountains. I do agree that British colonies of South Africa Australia and New Zealand benefited from climatic similarities - temperate zones suitable for European crops & livestock, but they didn’t require huge horizontal (latitudinal) tracks of land. Also, Africa is much larger than a standard projection map implies and by your logic, we should have had a continent-wide empire along a climatically similar stretch of land with lots of big cities.

Not around the Sun, but around its own axis. That's what determines where more insolation is - the positions of the poles and the equator and everything in between.

Here in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, nearly every town large enough to be called a city is on Lake Superior in the north or Lake Michigan in the south. There are small towns about every 10 to 15 miles between, a lot of which are sparsely populated now, but it makes sense.

Starbucks is here so expensive, (way more expensive than a coffee in a restaurant) that someone that buys daily for a year a coffee in SB could afford a quality automated coffee machine (400-500 price range) in just about 10-12 weeks and from that point on it just is cheaper to buy a thermo mug and take a coffee with you (if that is your thing to have a coffee to drink on the morning commute).

5:41 this argument doesnt work. I mean, you are absolutely correct about cities preferring to be near the ocean but "within 100 miles of the sea" covers most of europe, so its not remarkable that 60% of the largest cities are within 100 miles of the coast, even if it was randomly distributed or homogeneously.

Bangladesh is one the worst places to live in the area.
They actually jump the border to live in india, which is saying a lot about Bangladesh.
But that's mostly because of their government and economy than the geographic location.

This is even more true in poorer and more rural towns where cars are older and must drive farther.
