For someone who identifies as a non-binary person, they've certainly kept a binary-sounding first name...

I wish she would have kept the series going based on the other characters. It didn't have to be all about Maura. The other characters had so much more story to tell.

Good luck with smashing patriarchy with "they". I'm Hungarian and the Hungarian language has gender neutral pronouns... (there is no "he" or "she" ).... but guess what... patriarchy is fully in tact and :D . It's a super traditional gender-role culture. The government just took away Gender Studies as an accredited field because they said people are either born a man or a woman. People can call themselves whatever they want, and others should respect their wishes... but pronouns won't smash patriarchy or traditional gender roles. Education, time and experience will. The goal shouldn't be to not know what gender Jackie is when referring to them in a conversation... the goal should be for that information to not give someone an unfair/unrealistic impression or expectation of Jackie. It should be fine for Jackie to be a nurse whether they were born a biological male or female. Gender is fluid, but some people definitely are (and identify as) 100% male or female.. and that's fine too. I am a man that doesn't fit into some conservative traditional view of what a "real man" should be like. And I am proud of that. If I remove myself from "he" or "man" than I feel I reinforce the fact that "he/man" has specific categorical requirements that I don't meet. Fuck that. I am a man. I am a "he". But don't associate that with certain behaviors.

Meanwhile in ALL of the Austronesian languages of Southeast Asia, Oceania, and Madagascar, the pronouns are naturally genderless.

They/them should be the default; and the rest of the binary community can announce their gender.

My question is really in earnest: As a liberal I get the phrase "topple the patriarchy," which to me means a more balanced, shared, and cooperative exercise of power, as opposed to "topple the patriarchy" so that matriarchy can solely wield the power (which would also be an imbalance).

Many of Colbert's guests I have never heard of before, or even what they do like in this case the show Transparent. Often however I learn something new. In this case it was the explanation for the pronoun "they". While I have heard the pronoun used before, and never really had any problem using someones preferred pronoun, this one seemed confusing to me because of the plural reference. Jill provided a very clear justification for its use.

The patriarchy is a societal structure, it, NOT men are the enemy. The patriarchy is also ultimately destructive for most people, men and the planet included. The only people who actually win in a patriarchal system are wealthiest people on the planet, everyone else who thinks they benefit is being sold a bill of goods.

Honestly, before thinking about it now, I would have probably still asked if they knew if the baby was a boy or a girl. 🙂 I guess, I’m just thinking that as the world changes, we can think about doing things differently for ourselves. It is difficult to understand why the gender of an individual has become taboo. As a GAY Male, who fully accepts the spectrum of sexual orientation, I still find the defining of gender to a micro level a bit exaggerated. I suggest gender as Male or Female, and if a person wishes to redefine their gender through a transitioning process from one gender to another, as understandable. But personally (I stress personally), find binary, non-binary is taking matter just a little to the absurd. So, each to their own wishes...

Instead, before the birth, you could just respond with congratulations and say that you hope everyone is healthy. After the birth, you could say, “What an adorable baby! They look just like you.” Then, if they want to, the new parent can tell you their gender. Ultimately, all that matters is that everyone is happy. IMHO

If they could do it again, they would’ve casted a transwoman, but amazon didn’t think it would get an audience. This show has paved a way for future shows and is groundbreaking for its representation and storytelling on the trans and NB experience.

But if you were just to say "tell them I'll be there in a few minutes" this could mean both singular or plural. This is not the case for example if you had said "tell him I'll be there in a few minutes", then it would be clear you were talking about a single person. Same goes with the picking "someone" up from the airport. You have to set the context for "they" to mean singular (at least in current English). I don't think Jill adequately addressed Stephen's confusion about the plural nature of "they." Stephen's suggestion at 5:11 sounds more promising.

There are plenty of straight men who recycle.
We've been tearing that stuff down slowly throughout history anyways.

I guess my main concern is that some people want to destroy gender and just no thanks. My gender is pretty important to me.

                                                                                • Bunny Boy

Gender isn't a "box" it's just one aspect of a person's being. It's fine if you're nonbinary but not everybody is! That being said, good luck with your book.
