When Giant Deer Roamed Eurasia

  • Published: 08 August 2019
  • Megaloceros was one of the largest members of the deer family ever to walk the Earth. The archaeological record is full of evidence that our ancestors lived alongside and interacted with these giant mammals for millennia. But what happened when they did interact, when humans met this megafauna?

I think the Antler theory is most likely
Seems like an animal that can only survive in wide open spaces where predators can see them and I imagine those Antlers made it hard to run.

i have a hiIarious image in my head of giant deer trying to run away and slamming inbetween 2 trees

It sounds like you're suggesting that the female megaloceros were actively looking for the males with the biggest headgear to mate with, when in fact, they didn't. Like most deers today, the males fight among each other to compete for females. Those with the bigger weapons simply have the advantage to knock the opponents out and gain access to a harem.

Mammoths no doubt did the same thing in Eurasia, creating open spaces in what would otherwise have been thick forests. When the mammoths went extinct the megaloceros could no longer navigate the terrain because of their giant antlers, so they went extinct also. Their fates were intertwined.
