Watch A Martian Landslide Move Across The Surface of The Red Planet

  • Mars has an active surface, especially in the cold polar regions where carbon dioxide ice that binds soil together can evaporate in the summer and leave unstable terrain. Earlier this year another landslide from cliffs near the north pole was recorded, it's not the first by any means, but JPL engineer Doug Ellison used the time difference between the 3 colour channels to create a 3 frame animation showing the debris cloud moving over the Martian surface at about 70km/h. This was cool enough that I felt like sharing it along with a few other examples of shifting features on Mars.

    Here's Doug's tweet:

Computer renditions.... who needs photographs? We can see any planet in full view except the one we allegedly are on. I guess that is not important to some. I believe in factual information. Some don't need facts. Fantasy and fact is like oil and water. They don't mix together.

Hi Scott! Speaking of amazing orbiter images, could you please make a video about the LRO images of the Apollo landing sites, the astronaut foot tracks, the stuff they left there, and even the flag shadows visible in the images?

@It Me Tetri yah bad joke.sorry. did you know that the government knows how to melt the ice there and in that there hope'n that will make some kind of atmospher type of sh;t .. IDK but if man can start up a planet why the fook can't the fix this one ... you all the so called fossil fuel (oil) being drained faster then most river's on this planet... now the elites are taking the fook out as fast as they can. there's what 5 or 6 huge countries that have rocket that will leave earth, how many people do you think is going???? mars warms up? so the marsians produce also to much co2?

oh wait, right, the warming because of co2 is total bullshit.

I'm wondering if what you are seeing isn't an atmospheric stream of smoke prior to the actual impact. I don't think it is a "slide" across the surface but a stream of … something.. like a smoke trail in the thickest part of the Martian atmosphere before the impact. Just one geologist's opinion.

I expect the water would be mostly permanent, but covered by blown dust. Thought I read that Methane in Mars atmosphere is only 15 parts per billion by volume, and that this was unexpected because the sun's UV would break up the Methane molecules in such a short period, there should not be ANY. So it sounds like Methane is being continually produced by biologic or geologic processes, or there must be reservoirs of ancient sub-surface frozen methane, maybe covered by thick layers of dust, just like the Water Glaciers the planet is supposed to have at latitudes more or less midway between the poles and the equator.

How they can use penetrating radar and other spectral data to work all that out would be mighty interesting.

But the interstellar comet has me thinking we need to design a satellite to visit one of these interstellar objects. Something prebuilt and ready to fly as soon as we find one and can pin down it's trajectory and launch a satellite to intercept. We should keep finding more of these in the future as technology gets better one of them might be reachable as it passes by.
