Why Aaron Paul Struggled To Land A Successful Movie Role After Breaking Bad

  • He was the heart of perhaps the greatest television drama of all time - but that hasn't translated to big screen stardom.

In a recent sitdown with Vulture, Aaron Paul - star of the AMC TV series Breaking Bad and its upcoming sequel film, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie - offered a little insight as to why he hasn't popped up more often in feature films, and why he's not likely to in the future.

Paul recalled that, in the wake of the wild popularity of Breaking Bad and his subsequent stardom, he was eager to parlay his success into starring roles in other projects, whether on the big screen or small - and he was in no way hurting for opportunities.

After Breaking Bad ended in 2013, he starred in several smaller, independent features, though they did little to raise his profile. Paul's chance to make a splash in a big, expensive blockbuster came his way in 2014, when he appeared in the lead role in the video game adaptation Need For Speed. Unfortunately, the flick failed to jump-start Paul's movie career. It underperformed at the box office and was savaged by critics, and his next big studio effort - the Ridley Scott-helmed biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings - didn't fare much better.

It simply seemed that Paul's acting style - all barely contained emotion, with worlds of subtext plainly visible in his soulful, expressive eyes - was much better suited for the small screen, and he also appeared to thrive the most when his characters were given the room to breathe and grow afforded by the serial format. His next television effort, in the lead role in the Hulu original series The Path, drew critical accolades for his performance - but the creative minds behind the series weren't quite as focused as those responsible for Breaking Bad, and Hulu axed the show after three seasons.

Paul continued to surface in indie features and smaller major studio productions, but he continually ran up against the same problem: casting directors who seemed to think that they were securing the services of Jesse Pinkman, rather than Aaron Paul. Exhibit A: the 2016 Dwayne Johnson/Kevin Hart comedy Central Intelligence, in which Paul's character makes frequent use of a certain five-letter "B" word with which Pinkman was known to pepper every other sentence. Keep watching the video to see why Aaron Paul struggled to land a successful movie role after Breaking Bad!

Do you think being typecast spells the death for an actor's career?

Eric James I feel like as talented of an actor Aaron Paul is, his portrayal of Jesse Pinkman is forever ingrained in our memories so much so that it’s hard to see him any other way. His charisma is what made his character so good but it’s also what is holding him back from having a wide range in potential roles.

I think it CAN be difficult for them, if it's a really popular recurring role. But it is possible to branch eventually out. Think of Sean Connery as 007 for example.

I enjoyed it too. A few corny things here and there but that’s what you expect from those movies. The action and racing was filmed really well. Loved the inside the car POV during crashes.

i just think he was picking the wrong characters to act i feel like he does best when his characters are put in difficult situations that affects their life drastically and who they are as a person like roles that show the altering of somones innocence to something completely broken and unrecognizable

I think the fact that Aaron isn't really known for anything prior to Breaking Bad led to this problem. Bryan Cranston said in an interview that after Malcolm in the Middle he was offered tons of movie and tv parts as "the wacky dad". He just needs to wait for people to not associate him so strongly to Jesse, which is hard, considering he's one of the most beloved characters on one of the most beloved shows of all time. At some point enough time will have passed though. The same happened for Cranston.

I know from personal experience (my uncle) that fighting cancer costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. Medical bankruptcy is in the top three reasons why Americans file for bankruptcy (as my uncle did). People lose their homes, their cars and their savings etc. You can’t leave those things behind (plus all the money you would have saved your entire lifetime if not putting that money towards insurance premiums, deductibles and co-pays) if you used them to pay your medical bills. People in the next five developed nations do not experience this. Ever. Plus they can leave a job they don’t like because they’ll still have insurance, like if they would like to start a business or get a job with better working conditions and/or pay etc.

I highly doubt that. Medicare wouldn't leave Walt's family with money. It'd just help him with his medical bills. He wanted to leave money behind for them.

Then, he did it because he liked the power.

As great as his performance in breaking bad was, I have to agree with the fact that Aaron Paul’s career in the big screen has yet to take off unlike his co-star in breaking bad, Brayan Cranston, who managed to remain popular even after the show was ended 6 years ago while others probably can only get their hands on low budget movies. The curse is real. For example, take a look at Hugh Laurie who is and forever will be the one and only Dr. House no matter what movie he is in, and the show ended at roughly the same time as breaking bad did. That being said, I also think the impeccable performance Aaron Paul gave us in the breaking bad series will continue to attract lots of attentions from Hollywood. Personally, I think the fastest way to break his curse is to land in the Marvel Cinematic Universe on a superhero role who has his own independent movie because you know what, only a comic book superhero has the power to really balance out the phenomenon of Jesse Pinkman.

BTW, which superhero do you guys think Aaron Paul is best with?
