Stop spouting #Yang2020. Tell me how he will actually run the country and I'll consider him. UBI is a single policy, not an actual plan.

Very insightful information about how data could be use for good. The emergence of ai and all things automated how much would this affect the economy for a global standpoint. Third world countries are still not used to or even trust the positive impact this new creative way of living and trading would benefit all.

Data in it self isn't worth anything. The processing of data through algorithm creates value for companies and other entities.

Terrible idea. These services cost a lot more money than you might think. I'm talking millions a month in server and software maintenance/development. The reason companies make money is because people click on ads. Every ad click earns the platform mere cents. It's profitable, because there are billions of users. The companies use the data to increase the chances of you clicking on an ad. The data itself is just to optimize (or train) the model that determines what you may be interested in. At some point, the model will be so effective in showing you relevant ads that ad clicks will start to grow at a negligible rate in terms of data used to train the model. The result is you have to pay tons of money for email, social media, etc. and get paid back chump change for your now useless data because the models are already running at near optimal levels. Don't believe me? Study digital advertising, systems administration, machine learning, etc.

This video was so beautiful to watch and was uniquely engaging by how it played out the topic through different visual art forms that weren't rushed like much other news platforms are. The MID graphics display was very easy to understand and had refreshing icons. I was very pleased with this, and think I can hold an actual conversation about digital dignity. On another note, he didn't give a concise sure answer on how they would provide internet to the poor but replied saying they would figure it out when they get there. I couldn't go for this without knowing how they intend to preserve free internet. It gives too much autonomy and knowledge for all people with access to it to take away.

One can no more have a property right in data about their selves than they can in data about anything. One can only have property rights in physical objects. To say that I "own" my data is to say that I have a contingent property right to the disposition of any devise, including other people's brains, that contains my data.

The correct approach to controlling digital data about yourself (or anything) is to continue to develop permissionless blockchains that make controlling, and thereby monetizing, it as second nature as controlling your mouth.

I'd like to send Mr. Lanier my proposal, which I think solves the issues. I've come up with this project years ago, and have developed it to some extend. How should I reach him?

How will companies know that the data is being collected from an actual person? What stops me from creating a simple program that just clicks on links all day? What stops me from scaling that up to a program that clicks on a million links per second?

This is an interesting Idea the thing i'm interested in is will the general public go for and the big tech companies it's hard to start charging for something when it has always had the illusion of being free it could work if the price was cheap enough . it would be interesting if it actually happened though

This sounds like an amazing idea but my question is how will this work in the long run when we are about to enter the age of fully automated business many many people will be out of work will we end up becoming enslaved to consumerism in order to maintain the money rolling in if your income depends on your valuable data.

                                                        "Data is the new oil."
Yep, and we already live in ever-increasing data/message pollution, heading straight for the Dystopia Jaron describes.(If we're not already there)
What we easily forget about Information is that it requires Energy to create, store and transport. Jarons plan sounds nice but it will just increase the huge amounts of energy already needed to run the Net, by adding another cascade of data energy from every single Info-event. Data centres use huge amounts of power, adding to the overall energy-use bill, and inevitably adding proportional heat to the system. Apple wanted to build a data centre in Ireland which would have used as much power as Dublin, the largest city of 1.5 million people....! ?
Haven't even mentioned how financial Power will act as it always does....to maintain itself, like banks, corporations seeking monopoly
Or the possible adverse mental health effects.
Remember the opening scene of Johnny Mnemonic where people were twitching and jerking from NAS(Nerve Attenuation Syndrome), or Information Overload....?

The idea that a small family COULD earn $20,000/yr from the value of their data pertains to families that earn many tens of thousands of dollars per year. Not to families that earn $22,000/yr.

I think paying for services we use is a better model. (I pay YouTube, rather than watch ads.) I agree that we should own our data. But I don't much care for the idea that we will still be advertised at, but we will get a check as the manager of our own personal advertising account  (The idea that our data is valuable only makes sense if it is being used in marketing campaigns.)

Compare the estimated value of data (for some families) with the estimated value of natural wealth [$100/day per person, for everyone on Earth (not just for the affluent)]. (Robert Costanza, et al; Nature; 2014)

We should make industries pay fees when they put pollution, deplete resources or destroy wildlife habitat. If random polls show that most people think there's not too much of this or that kind of impact, then we will know that the associated fee is set at the right amount.

Sharing fee proceeds to all people would end poverty throughout the world. (This should be a global policy. Natural wealth belongs to all. If it is applied only in some nations, industries would tend to flee to the more lax jurisdictions.)
