What Joker Gets Right That Other Batman Movies Got Wrong

  • Dark, dismal, and as realistic as it gets, Joker gives the Batman mythos a whole slew of updates that makes everything feel more grounded in the real world and, in many ways, more effective. These are just a few of the things that Joker does better than any other Batman movie.

Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal of Arthur Fleck is more relatable than any other Clown Prince we've met on the big screen. We all know what it's like to imagine romantic lives with those who don't reciprocate, to fantasize about being heralded in a world of fame, and to be recognized for being special. We don't, thankfully, all respond as Fleck does when those desires aren't fulfilled, but still, getting to know Arthur gives us something we've never had with any other Joker an understanding of why he becomes and remains the Joker.

Cesar Romero's Joker of the '60s television show was, like the rest of that series' antagonists, just a crook with a particular theme. The origins of Heath Ledger's Joker are a mystery in The Dark Knight and his motivations seem to change from scene to scene. We get to meet Jack Napier before he becomes Joker in 1989's Batman, but it doesn't help make the character more relatable. He was always kind of a huge, homicidal jerk.

Obviously, Christopher Nolan and Tim Burton had different priorities when making their respective films than Todd Phillips did with Joker, but as MCU villains like Tom Hiddleston's Loki and Josh Brolin's Thanos have taught us, the more we can relate to a supervillain, the more we enjoy their portrayal.

We briefly meet some of the Wayne family in Joker. Thomas Wayne is running for mayor, Arthur Fleck gets the opportunity to meet his future nemesis Bruce Wayne as a young boy, and we even briefly meet the butler Alfred Pennyworth. Particularly in the case of Thomas Wayne, the versions we see of the characters in Joker aren't quite the saints Bruce Wayne usually remembers in the various movies. Keep watching the video to see what Joker gets right that other Batman movies got wrong!

In my opinion, this joker was inferior to the one shown in the dark knight. I think revealing so much about the background of the joker was a mistake. Like a magic trick, once explained the magic is gone forever. This joker was portrayed as a person with mental issues, an obvious attention seeker, someone who dreams of normal life and relationships and who blames society for his state. Everything about him is planned and rehearsed like an act, nothing is spontaneous and everything is reactionary making the plot predictable. The effect his killings had on the masses who were already at the edge was thus effortless and unintentional. The joker from the dark knight was completely different, he didn't demand attention he took it, he never reacted to events he caused the whole god damn thing. He had a plan all along but everything seemed spontaneous and out of order. He was a true agent of chaos. All this joker did was dancing around and cough laughing.

This is the type of creativity that Edward Norton wanted when he did the Incredible Hulk movie. They edited and released a totally different movie and the reason he refused to do any more. To bad. Look forward to Joker 2. Phoenix enjoyed doing this to much and really can’t stop thinking about it as he has discussed already about what they could do next. Never thought I would ever see someone top Heath’s version. Bravo mr Phoenix.

My problem is he came off more of as a crazy loser and isnt methodical as the Joker is supposed to be, it's all based off whim. It's like any average man can become the Joker. He is still portrayed as dangerous and unpredictable but it's just seems to come up missing somehow, it's like I don't want to know why he's insane. His persona just came off as very lame.

These people don’t get that Joker is telling the story and he loves blaming people for his problems especially Batman. So it’s only logical Joker wants the world to be just as dark as he is and Thomas to be nothing more then an asshole.

Joker was phenomenal but I think an important aspect has been missed. One of the biggest twists comes from Thomas Wayne himself. After the subway murders, Wayne himself acknowledges that the degenerate 3 worked for him but he didn't know them. But he referred to them as family. Penny worked for Wayne 30 years prior but he knew everything about her when confronted by Arthur. He is a billionaire in the middle of a campaign but could recall everything about her, her alleged boyfriend and the abuse Arthur was subject to. Also that he was adopted and totally dismissed him being his son. How could he know all of these details, even what was in her file at Arkham if he wasn't involved someway, somehow??? Let's not forget she had a signed photo from Wayne....hummm. think about it

Joker wins because it did not rely on CGI.
Did not try to cram a backstory and death in one movie.
Did not waste any time with needless explosions or wild stunts.

For sure the backstory is more relatable and realistic. Falling into a tank of green laughing gas goo wasn't working for me.

This chick faults 2 movies for portraying their comicbook traits in the movies but this feels more believable? This movie isn't praised for being an origin story. It's receiving acclaim for developing A Character unrelated to the world it was created for with passive tie-ins. There was no point in calling it Joker except naming rights. She literally deconstructs every comicbook-related aspect of the character and his world calling it wrong. Thumbs way down!
