Jonathan, I'm watching this for the 2nd time so I can fully digest all your advice, as I plan to get a new I MAC this spring. I just noticed that you have a Rolleflex twin lens camera on your training table! Man I still have one too, and earned my way through college as a photographer. Mine needs a lot of work to put back in shape again, and I was wondering is you're still using this great classic camera in this all digital age? Great video and sound advice!

There's a lot of used 21" iMacs out there, too bad the RAM isn't easily upgradable...

To say “you definitely shouldn’t buy” the i3 iMac is a bit head Scratching, lol. Who is this video made for? Because a lot of people who buy Macs do very simple computing. We aren’t all editing 4K videos, lol.

The i3 with an upgraded SSD is a really nice computer for a ton of people. (SSD should be mandatory, I don’t know why we even talk about moving hard drives, fusion drives, etc.)

Hello Jonathan......I am viewing this video six months after it was posted. Is your recommendation for a desktop unit still the same?

Have been using PC at home but it just died. My wife and I love our iPhones, so we are considering making the switch to iMac desktop. Has anyone else made the switch after decades on PC?

can i ask a serious question? i'm considering trading in my 2017 5k imac and getting the refreshed 13"mbp. thoughts? the only reasons i'd want to hang on to the imac is for the 27" 5k display, no t2 chip, and user upgradeable RAM; but there are so many other things going against the imac. i would like to think apple is going to refresh it sometime in the next year? or less? the looks are dated, which i don't care that much about in and of itself, but if a redesign comes with upgraded I/O, that's something I'd want. It's also got the same old ass BT, not even an option for 10gig ethernet (not that I can make the most of it, but it's like a $90 upgrade on the mac mini), the vega 48 seems like an overpriced and lackluster upgrade, and they leave so much empty space on the inside, which could have been used for a secondary fan(????), which would seem like a smart idea for a computer with heat issues... desktops are going out of fashion, and mobile productivity is the present and the future. But I still do enjoy the desktop experience. I figure that with a MBP + TB3hub + egpu + external storage, I can get similar performance (if I go for the 15"), plus portability.

As far as why i'm looking at the 13" mbp is because I can almost trade them for each other straight up (maybe a few hundred on top for upgraded RAM and SSD). Ideally I'd like the MBP 15" with the vega 20 and 32gb RAM and a larger SSD thanks to the price drops. But because of the nightmare stories I've seen relating to the keyboard and thermal throttling, it seems like a big risk to spend that much money on a laptop, especially with the rumors of a new MBP with a keyboard going back to the scissor mechanism... even if it ends up being in an even higher tier pricewise. Also, the vega 20, while better than the radeon pro, is still pretty underwhelming.

Should I just wait to see what Apple releases for new imacs or mbps? The problem with this is that my trade in value is going to sink fast.

No I'm not a "power user", but if I'm going to invest this kind of money on a computer, I want it to have a little more longevity.

To be honest, I've had a hard on for the MBP for a while, but the price to performance seems... blehhhh... plus the aforementioned throttling issues and crap keyboard (tbh i like typing on it, but i dont want to deal with having to get it repaired all the time).

                            I'm so torn.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm planning to buy (Customize iMac) mainly for music production but I might also use it for video editing, I wanted to know what if i have to choose from two options like:

                                3.6GHz 8-core 9th-generation / 8GB RAM / Radeon Pro 580X with 8GB of GDDR5 memory / 1TB SSD .
                                3.7GHz 6-core 9th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.6GHz / 8GB RAM / 1TB SSD
with Radeon Pro Vega 48 with 8GB of HBM2 memory

Which one is the best choice ?
I'm going to upgrade Ram by myself later in both options.
                                So basically I'm confuse between (3.6GHz 8-core & Radeon Pro Vega 48)

@Satya Yaya I don't know exactly how to do that. My Macbook Pro and iMac were perfectly calibrated out of the box. But if you need to calibrate, you can go to Apple > System Preferences > Displays > Color > Calibrate. However, I don't know if that will fix your issue. Also, I just wanted to say that if you're going to purchase a new 27" iMac, I would highly recommend getting an SSD. You can always upgrade the RAM later. I hope this helps.

Sadly, you can't upgrade the hard drive. With the 27", you can upgrade the RAM though. I can edit 4k footage on my 2012 MacBook Pro in FInal Cut Pro as long as I use proxies. I hope this helps.

It's not. Better than a HDD, sure, but not a great compromise. Internal space is pretty much irrelevant on a desktop, you can just connect a cheap external drive with several terabytes if you need space. Give me even 256gb of fast SSD over a 2TB fusion drive any day, it's much preferable. And 256GB is enough for all system files and most apps. Keep the system disk as fast as possible, keep large files on an external drive. And the 256GB SSD will not be more expensive to the manufacturer than a 2 TB fusion drive anyway.
