He probably said "I'm not justifying this. But it is a villains story" like 8 times in 2 minutes

Arthur Fleck in this movie is a character who has no good memories in life to fall back on, his entire life is tragic. He is certainly not the same as a serial shooter because on the subway he was being brutally beaten. There is an element of revenge concerning his Mother and hateful work associate Randall but it's clouded in psychosis and is partially self defense in itself. His mother is the only death not justified being that he really didn't know if all the allegations against her was embellished to silence her. Excellent movie.

You need to watch the movie again. The ending gives it all away. This is a dark comedy, not a drama. It is a very dark comedy. Furthermore, the movie is a portrayal of fiction 'INSIDE OF' a fictional universe. It does not occur in that reality, but is merely a story (a joke) that the Joker mulls over in his mind. This 'joke' tells you exactly who and what the Joker really is without revealing anything factual about his true past. He's a psychopath. In his mind, 'he' is the hero and always has been. Everyone else is the villain and that's the joke. The people see him as the villain, when actually they are the villains, at least in the Joker's mind.

I needed to seek out your review for this movie because I settled at, “This is an amazing movie, but it’s not about the Joker we know and love.” It’s normally said with some disappointment. However...if I come from an “elseworld” perspective and “new origin” or “his own thing,” I can digest it much better. Especially since Phoenix may not return to the role, I can see it as a one-off art piece.

I appreciate your objective perspectives on many things comic books universe. This is the only perspective I have found online (post release) that has helped me figure out how to have seen this movie without feeling like I wanted a different Joker.

Phoenix kills (pun-intended) in this movie. I never argued that. I just never felt like this was “my Joker” if that makes any sense to a fellow Joker fan. But a “new origin” story makes it feel refreshing. That said, I still wish there were more mastermind incorporated into this origin. Though, I know that wouldn’t fit into this current story arc.

Anyways, you have no idea how much I appreciate your review. I felt like there were no other true Joker fans left in the world, post Joker movie release.

It seems that nobody in their review of this film realises that Arthur's laugh is not a result of an illness or brain injury. His mother when questioned about her sons abuse at the hands of her boyfriend simply replies that he's a happy boy that always laughs and smiles. This is referring to Arthur being invisible to his mother during those acts of abuse and his screams do not evoke a response from her as she blocks out the traumatic acts. She is in denial and gives no attention to what he is being subjected to. His only defence is to laugh so that he is visible to her in the hope of ending the assault. The psychological damage from his abuse causes Arthur to laugh during traumatic and stressful situations as a defense mechanism; a behaviour learned from childhood to mask his fear and seek help through attention.

Also, his dancing after a violent altercation isn't because of the enjoyment he feels, but rather its another defence mechanism called avoidance that disconnects him from his actions and allows him to take himself to another place where he feels happy. This detachment is a means of coping with situations that trigger trauma. Its a temporary evasion of reality for protection.

im not even a comic book fan im not even close yet this movie is so captivating i think it is very memorable...i even have a memory of mark hamil's joker even though i did not religously watch it as a child.

Idk brotha. The acting, the cast dis amazing. Only issue was, if they wanted to elaborate on how or what made the joker. I dont feel his reasons or the scenes where to " sadistic" or reasons to make hime turn into the joker... The laughs are sick AF. The illness is a goo touch also appose to a chemical accident.. Just wanted to see some twisted scenes to " justify" him becoming the JOKER.. Iconic villain, iconic reason to kill the big black bat and everyone else.right?. Cuz some people just want to see the world burn!!!!!!!!

Film wise, its a good movie. But everyone needs to stop comparing this movie to other comic book movies. This story could’ve been told without it having to be the Joker

Just watched it with my family. When I asked them if they liked it, they said "Eh, Suicide Squad is better"

I felt utterly betrayed that day.

What if they do tie the movie into the DCEU because if you think about it Deadpool and X-Men have a different time frame than the avengers? Or am I wrong?👀🤷🏾‍♂️🤔

I totally agree with the comments about JP deserving an Oscar. I think he delivered a masterpiece with his acting. Regarding "which Joker is better", they way I see it Heath and Joaquin just handled to us the best Jokers we have ever seen. HL's Joker was unstable yet smart and unpredictable but with a purpose behind every action. With JP's Joker, you see a more, if I must say, defensive yer "mentally unstable" (or ill) driven Joker. I loved the movie I would have love for it to have ended with the joker being interviewed by Harley (imagine Margot Robbie at the end). Also, I hope to see an iteration with this Joker and Batman movie. Neither of them reach their full potential alone...

The last 10 mins was great but the movie ova all it was just so boring just like the new chucky movie u could’ve name this anything else n it would’ve been a good movie but when u give it the name joker that’s a lot to live up to fans r craving action entertainment the movie had maybe 2 funny parts how did the guy that made hangover make suck a depressing ass movie #DCSUCKS ... just stop please 😷🤢🤦🏽‍♂️

Hard to compare the two. Heath was so good as well. Obviously. But what I’d really like to know is how great he could’ve been if the dark knight was a joker staring movie. Being the main character. Instead of just a supporting actor. This is better but it’s hard to say Heath would’ve have been better than this. Given a proper chance.

It's basically it's that classic one bad day concept from Alan Moore's Batman story The Killing Joke.
