alot o people say texas has great roads. im proud of that being a texan myself. houston flooded because they dont clean out their drainage and waterways. also raising flood plains to build new housing without investing in upgraded drainage. its their own fault. personal experience trust me

Wait, so the gas tax is what pays for road repairs, Tesla is making the roads less safe.

Almost any funding a state receives from the federal level, is considered as supplemental, never as primary. Each state also has a tax added to the price.

Each city uses funding collected by state taxes and donations to use as they see fit.

18.3¢ is a lot when you count the number of drivers in a city like LA compared to a city like McAllen , TX. However, what costs $1.50 in LA, costs only $0.85 in Mcallen ( valutainment)

LA is much bigger than what people think, it takes over many little towns. I live in one of those tiny towns LA took over for water uses. We were always put at the very bottom of every LA programs regarding traffic. Potholes would normally take 5 years and the complaints required at least 30 signatures.

They recently raised our gas tax and not much has changed. Word on the streets is that they're using the money to pay state employees pensions instead of infrastructure

                            Fellow Chicago-ins

If you’re from Chicago, then you know that when the city says they filled the potholes, what they actually mean is they turned them into uneven speed bumps in the middle of the god damn road.
I didn’t realize that when I decided to go to the store today I was actually hitting a double black diamond with Moguls littered up the ass on the street.
Let’s all move somewhere that doesn’t tax us for yawning in public. That is all

Stagnant fuel tax rate? So give me a discount on the unbelievably huge employment tax or property tax and inflate the fuel tax rate. It’s greed. It doesn’t go back into things for the public. A percentage does and the rest just funds affluent lifestyles.

A lot of roads where I grew up in Florida were either needlessly reworked or purposfully made worse to secure contracts for repair.

A lot of the problem with legislation and acquisition is unintended consequences. Not all laws are written maliciously but the unintented result is increased administrative costs through programs that try to increase accountability and auditing. These programs often cost more than the losses they prevent. The road budget likely is siphoned off by projects that are required just because of some weird rule or also because sometimes the issue isnt a money issue but an audit issue. There are also situations where states lose money for next years budget if they dont use all the funds in their current budgets. Money ends up wasted instead of conserved because they get penalized for being frugal.

One thing to consider is how ridiculously inefficient governments are with tax dollars. You think they're shopping for the best price, stretching tax dollars as far as they can go? Nope. They're not even looking at the bill because they've got a buddy that owns the pavement company that'll kickback a % in cash or stock options. But yes, let's just give them more money instead of cracking down on how the money is actually spent.

I think the bigger issue is that if they do increase tax to pay for the roads people fear that the money will not be spent responsibanly in the manner it was stated.

Why dont we fix the road? We must first collect the ever increasing road fuel taxes at ever increasing rates (Penna. now the highest at $.80/gallon) and divert the funds to the bankrupted unionized teachers retirement fund system ... even that this retirement system in some local schoold districts are paying 90% of revenue to retired teachers.

The best idea so far is to prosecute all the legislators who did not honor their oath and bond of office, and who diverted such funds to the special interests who elected them (ultimately the excess going to the legislators private bank accounts). A careful itemized review of the oath and bond for legislators should discover that most state legislators are crooks, need to be incarcerated. The savings by incarceration should pay for the road improvements to 500% better than when the legislators were free to rape the state budgets for their own narrow special interests.

Good luck trying to convince Americans to get behind increasing taxes to pay to fix it. Increasingly we have become a society that expects to get something for nothing. Contrast this with Japan or Europe where owning a car is a lot more expensive on a per year basis. They don't seem to have as many problems with road repair and maintenance.

You could literally take $250 billion dollars from our defense budget and not affect national security in the slightest. Then we could all have pretty good roads. A stupidly high military budget doesn't benefit the American people, but proper road funding does. It's one thing to have a strong military but we're seriously overdoing it when it comes to our military budget.
