  • Joker is dividing the heck out of audiences far and wide, including one very significant crowd: Oscar voters. The Hollywood Reporter recently spoke with a number of members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and like critics and audiences, they were largely split on the film.

First, let's hear from the crowd that loved it. One male member of the Members at Large Branch who saw the film at the official Academy screening noted that the flick was well-received by the 500 audience members, and said,

"I think it's brilliant. Joaquin Phoenix has never been better. [...] I thought that the [director of photography], production designer and others created the look and feel of the period really well, and the fact that it has very contemporary themes of economic/class inequities felt just right. Overall, a home run."

A female member of the same branch agreed, although she admitted that her, quote, "stomach was still churning" the day after viewing the film. She added,

"It made me uncomfortable from the very first frame to the last, but I thought the movie was extraordinary. It's the most outstanding performance I've seen in many years [...] It's still early, but I can certainly see myself nominating it for best picture. And [Phoenix] has to get nominated, or the actors branch doesn't know what it's doing."

A male member of the writers' branch compared the film favorably to the last picture to score an Oscar win for an actor portraying the Joker, saying,

"I thought the filmmaking was exceptional certainly the most innovative superhero movie since The Dark Knight. [...] I haven't seen any of this season's 'Academy' movies yet, but, artistically, I think this film is stronger than many of last year's Oscar-nominated films."

Then there was one male member of the producers' branch who boldly predicted that Joker will deliver come February, saying,

"I loved it and it will win Best Picture. I am really bored with all the superhero movies, but here I really liked it because it's a great movie before it's a genre movie."

To say that many of the Oscar voters who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter were not quite so impressed would be a massive understatement. Those who disliked the film disliked it intensely, and they didn't hold back when discussing what they perceived to be Joker's faults. Keep watching the video to see Oscar voters give their honest opinions about Joker!

    What the haters are lacking:
    1. Watching the Movie a Couple of Times
    2. Actually Paying Attention
    3. Understanding the comparison between Joker and Batman
    4. Experiencing Bad Endings
    5. Being Thick Skinned and not a Disney World Softy

Watching a man failed by society, a system that doesn't understand the basics of mental illness, then become the Joker is about the problems of today. You ever wonder what makes a child pick up a gun and shoot a school? What makes a women, or man kill their family, or themselves? That's the entire fulfillment of this Film. I hope Joaquin gets an oscar for this. After watching this I can see why some people have became inspired by this film. It's emotional, dark, sad, powerful and beautiful. This film, in my opinion is the best film I have ever watched. The hate is all political.

Imagine being a film critic if Joker is hard for you to watch. That's like being a sommelier and saying "Yeah I just can't stomach reds". I mean how fucking sensitive are people if THIS makes them have to "drink away their discomfort"? Go back to watching pixar, you actual children.

It's too much of a mirror for the haters. They know mental illness and the way society views it is the issue, which the film depicts brilliantly, but they want to blame guns. That's why they hate it. As far as "hyper violence", he kills a total of, if I remember correctly, 6 people, the first three in self defense. If they had left him alone, they'd still be breathing. Also, he intended to kill himself on Murray's show but Murray wouldn't stop mocking him so, while not in any way justified, killing him was not his original plan. So, in the end, he only intentionally killed two people, the guy who lied about the gun, and then the social worker, to escape, after he had snapped completely and was now the Joker. Just my two cents.

Honestly, I have a hard time seeing much of the Joker in any of the movie. Even the end. It could be just as easily about John Wayne Gacy. They made a decent movie, But not for the Joker. Joker is a genius, so the base personality and abilities are missing. Joaquin played his part well. The script just fell short.

Let's be honest. It was good but all it ever really was was a homage to Taxi Driver, updated for a younger generation with a superhero catchline to it. I am in no way saying it's bad but I know which film I'd rather watch.

I have to say, the lack of subtlety is the only thing I'd point out. The delusion and all that should've been tendered more carefully. Joaquin is great! Effing with the thematic point. Other characters seem a bit flat, especially Thomas Wayne. I wish there was more time to put in the film bout Thomas. He looked way too corporate and arrogant in the film, which took away a lot of conflict development. It felt like it was BAM! Thomas vs Joker and clowns.

I didn't expect it to be as violent as it was but I like that the writers and the director didn't shy away from it. I'm so sick of the CG heavy comic book to movie adaptations. Some shots were just gorgeous and it didn't need to be on a green screen with a ton of CG elements to make it look good.
