I want to make a very featureless affordable sedan for people who have no choice but to get a car. No radio or air conditioning. The body of the car would be plastic and the frame would only be as good as it needs to be to be safe. There would be basic rims with no hub caps. Probably an in-line 4 with a cvt transmission that takes regular gas.

Nope. Sorry Millennial. I remember the 1960s. A new car lasted 100,000 miles tops and often needed major repairs like valve jobs, water pumps and transmission rebuilds at 50 or 60k miles. Not to mention tune ups, spark plugs and brake jobs about every 10k miles. Today’s cars routinely hit 100k miles on just oil changes and lots of them are still rolling with more than a quarter million miles on the odometer. When you factor in longevity and cost per mile to operate cars are LESS EXPENSIVE than they were 50 years ago, which is why most families now can afford at least two cars.

7-9 year loan for a car is normal in my country, but the interest is usually not more than 4-5pc. How is 25pc interest even legal?? How is interest >15pc legal? Deymn...

The banking system. That's the problem. They make up inflation. People have to rely on making more loans for more things as our wages stay the same as they were 30 years or so ago. Bam. Perfect debt slaves. I'd say what we would have to do to correct this problem but nobody would be willing to do it. So when the day comes that we have to take out a loan for our groceries... just remember it's only like that because everyone is allowing it to be like that.

You can't just say they are cheaper now, because they have stereo and shit. It is just progress, that made them so cheap.
4:30 It is not fine. You pay way more while getting the technoligical standart of today, like you did back then.

Until 2-3 years ago, I would have agreed that the safety features are "worth it". But today reverse cameras are required by law, most base-models have blind spot warning systems, infotainment screens that go obsolete in 4 years, and stuff like electronic parking brakes that make it nearly impossible for the average Joe/Jane to do regular maintanence DIY. I feel like the sweet spot right now is 2010-2015 base models. Milage isn't too high (50-60k mi), you can get a 60 month loan close to the cost of leasing a brand new car, and the majority of the depreciation hit the first owner. Oh yeah, and the stereo and control are still somewhat analog/serviceable/upgradable.

Increase in car costs has a lot to do with increase in regulations. If classic cars were manufactured today they’d be extremely cheap but illegal to drive.

                                                $825 to $325 (61% decrease)

It should be $23,000 to $9,060 (61% decrease) to be a fair comparison.

Just be careful with your use of averages. The uber-rich skew the distribution curve of the country’s income rates, so it’s easy to be misled thinking folks at the bottom are doing better than they are. 🤓

the added problem is also that as soon as you pay your car loan off, it has almost 0 resale value, because cars are designed to be disposable goods now. At this point, just going to save up and buy a "forever" car that's safe, has good fuel economy, and the infotainment is either easy to update or easy to replace with new tech. prob a gently used accord or civic.

Well they have more parts, and more computerized systems, and one of the first rules for both is the more stuff there is, the more likely something will break. Even beyond that, new cars are messing up on basic functions, shit my step mom got a new jeep renegade and it's transmission had trouble under 20k. Now she has a new Cherokee and it's got suspension issues.
Gm just had a recall on 612 THOUSAND of their vehicles with a variable abs system. It's glitchy computer would lose signal to a brake and lock the opposite side.
Car manufacturers are putting in useless features on everything, padding their production cost and dealers are charging ridiculous prices for new vehicles and dealer repairs. They've created a bubble and it will pop sooner or later.
